Fishing Report
By Stan Gabruk
Blue Marlin Are in The House!
This week the conditions at our famous fishing grounds have continued to improve with the dirty water at Corbetaña finally turning to the sapphire blue we all look for again. This, combined with perfect water temperatures at 82 degrees and plentiful bait, is making this season shape up nicely.
Usually in the middle of June, second to third week, we’ll see the Marlin return and this year the Blues are right on time. They’ve been out at Corbetaña and El Banco, but they haven’t been taking the bait no matter what you did. All that has changed now with Sirena coming in with the first Blue Marlin of the year with Capt. Freddy, First Mate Chilongo and of course, the lucky angler Pete Koel! It tipped the scales at 600 lbs., caught on live bait that was cast to it. Funny thing about this fish, it was caught on a Shimano 30 reel on an Ugly Stick pole. Now most of you out there with any sense are calling Bull… But as god is my witness, it took Pete five hours to boat this baby on a reel that was strictly spectra and used a 40-lb leader. Why this pole was trolling, I’ll never know, but five hours later they got it to the boat. Needless to say, this was a one fish day for him!
Both Corbetaña and El Banco have had Yellowfin Tuna in the 40 to 100-lb range coming in this week. Also, Sailfish are abundant, most of which are in the 80-lb and 80-inch length or longer. Unusually large for this time of the year, but hey, who’s complaining?
Those venturing out for 8 hours or longer will return with world class fish. That’s right, sports fans, summer is here and so are the fish! But that’s not to say shorter trips aren’t worth going out for, with Skip Jacks, Jack Caravels, Snappers, Mackerels, even the occasional Sailfish make these trips worth while. Especially for those who aren’t looking for an all day fight with Moby Dick!
You know, for weeks now I’ve been telling you how to avoid substandard charter companies, and it never occurred to me to recommend who to go with. Since I write this article weekly, I naturally assume that people automatically know that the Captains and boats I use are the best in Marina Vallarta. So I’m going to do some profiles on reliable Captains with a long history of catching tournament winning fish! One such captain is Captain Hector of Pecositas II. His nick name is Torta, like the sandwich, and where that name came from is a mystery to me. Hector just went out and purchased a brand spanking new 2008, 32-ft. Luhrs Express that’s nothing less than spectacular. Personable, fun and skilled are the words that come to mind when describing Captain Hector to clients, and what to expect. He’s usually working with Chorra as first mate, who was the captain of another boat until just recently. Combined between them is more than fifty years of fishing experience in these waters, which means you coming in with the fish of your dreams! Top notch equipment, a reliable and fast boat combined with all the experience these waters have to offer makes Capt. Hector and Chorra a tough team to beat. If you don’t come in with fish on this boat, it’s not because there was anything lacking from this team! Frankly, this team would be a good choice for those actually looking to win a tournament and not be just a participant! If interested in booking Pecositas II, just contact me at Master Baiter’s Sportfishing and Tackle, info at the bottom of the page! Check out Capt. Hector’s happy group in the photo.
Carlos has recovered from being hit with that high tension wire. He hasn’t experienced any super natural powers or abilities as are reported by people who get struck by lightening as yet. Until then, Carlos will continue to do what he can to eliminate the graffiti we have in our beautiful city! Thanks to people like Mari Macklin and her friend Meisha Gomez of Santa Cruz, California, Carlos will be able to continue is good work!
Don’t forget about our bomberos (firefighters). They need your support as well to save lives and property. Look for my article elsewhere in this publication to see how you can help. Funny, just people talking and getting the word out has produced unexpected results from people in Calgary, Texas, Vancouver, and the list is growing. So check it out and tell anyone that will listen about our bomberos. Then you’ll be doing your part as well!
Until Next Week, Don’t Forget To Kiss Your Fish…
